Sitting at the edge of the medieval square of Romerberg in the heart of Frankfurt is where you'll find this attraction. Ostzeile is located on the east side of the square opposite the Romer.
Ostzeile came about after Frankfurt’s old town was destroyed after World War II, and it was deeply discussed as to how the area between the Dom and Romer should be rebuilt. Then during the 1970’s half-timbered houses were constructed on the east side of Romerberg, and in 1981 buildings were constructed on the “Eastern Ring” that adopted names like Grosser Engel (The Giant Angel) and Goldener Greif (Golden Griffin).
The buildings are picturesque and fairytale like to look at and the ground floors are now used as restaurants and shops. There is no shortage of outdoor seating along the square to sit and take in the splendid surroundings.
Visitors should not miss this area in the heart of the old town of Frankfurt , if not to snap an image of these reconstructed 15th and 18th century half timbered homes.
