Formerly a police station, the Hauptwache Building is now a popular café located in the heart of the inner city of Frankfurt on a busy plaza of same name 'Hauptwache'. The Hauptwache Building is within walking distance from all the major attractions for example, Alte Oper, Eschenheimer Turm, Goethehaus and Paulskirche.
The building was designed in 1729, by one of Frankfurt’s main builders Johann Samhaimer and was first used as the seat of the city’s defense authorities. There was also a prison in the building but was stormed in 1833 by students trying to free inmates. A lot of soldiers were killed during this in this riot and this became known as Frankfurter Wachenstrum. The students were trying to trigger revolutionary uprisings but this failed at that time.
Hauptwache was used as a police station until 1904, the building then became a Café. The building was severely damaged by bombings during World War II, but was rebuilt in 1954, it was however located at the centre point of the city’s public transportation and it was literally in the way when the U-Bahn subway was built in 1967 so the building was taken apart stone by stone and rebuilt on top of the U-Bahn
